“Comes to the Light: Learning about the Entangled Families of Edgefield, South Carolina,” shares the background of my immediate family’s history. It's a history I did not know  until I became a genealogist. The more I learned about my family history, the more I realized that the story - and the history that I was uncovering - could relate to many African Americans and their ancestors - particularly the struggles our ancestors faced to enable their descendants to become the people they are today. Excitedly, I discovered one direct ancestor who has the potential to connect millions of Americans from different ethnic groups, faiths, and walks of life.

Knowledge is power – and it is through that concept that we present to you a project worth getting behind. Stronger Together: The Moses Williams Genetic Genealogy Project was started by two strangers who found each other through genealogical research when they discovered they were cousins via DNA...and uncovered a story of multiple shared ancestors. They realized that the place their ancestors came from (Edgefield, South Carolina) was not just another small town, but a place when, in its hay-day had a huge impact in the forming of the United States. Edgefield, South Carolina connects to well-known people such as Strom Thurmond, Senator Andrew Butler, the infamous Preston Brooks, 50 Cent and L.L. Cool J. Our research has shown that in one way or another we are related to all of them.
